Paul is Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Reading.

He has 46+ years’ teaching and leadership experience, and in reviewing degree programmes in mathematical sciences, including as external examiner and degree course accreditation and recognition, both nationally and internationally. His 485+ publications span research in numerical analysis, computational fluid dynamics, mathematics/science education, and teaching/learning.

Paul has experience of education policy and practice in the university sector, and in the pre-university sector – particularly in post-16 mathematics, including work for DfE and Ofqual as an expert adviser and subject specialist, including for A levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Core Maths, and GCSE Mathematics; for the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment in NI (CCEA) and Qualification Wales (QW); and for the Royal Society, including as a member of their Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) and as Chair of the Expert Panel for Sixth Form and FE (16-19).

His interest in pre-18 education includes membership and chair of Strategic Boards for Maths Hubs, many outreach and widening participation activities, Maths4Girls Academic Steering Committee. He was the 107th President of the Mathematical Association (MA) and is also very proud to now be the first President of AMiE.

Paul sits on many national bodies relating to mathematics and mathematics education, including many committees for the two learned societies for mathematics: the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) and the London Mathematical Society (LMS), and for the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences (CaMS). He is also the UK representative to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI), an assessor for The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education, and was the Chair of the Joint Mathematical Council of the UK (JMC).

As Honorary Secretary at the IMA Paul is chair of professional and accreditation panels with responsibility for Fellowship (FIMA), Chartered Designations CMath, CSci, CMathTeach, and Advanced Data Science Professional (AdvDSP) certification, along with accreditation for degrees in data science, the latter as part of the Alliance for Data Science Professionals (AfDSP).

Paul was elected Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA); elected one of the inaugural Fellows of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences (FAcadMathSci); and awarded Chartered Mathematician (CMath) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) designations.

Paul was appointed CBE in The King’s New Year Honours List 2023 for services to Education.
